Jewelry Photography Setup for Beginners

Jewelry Photography Setup for Beginners

The exact beginner-friendly setup for jewelry photography — under $50, no fancy gear, professional results.

You want to photograph your jewelry for your online store, but you don't know where to start.

You've seen those beautiful catalog photos — perfect white backgrounds, sparkling stones, zero shadows — and assumed they cost thousands of dollars and a professional studio.

They don't.

You can set up a jewelry photography station in 15 minutes, for under $50, using things you already have around your house. Let's build it.

The Philosophy: Light > Gear

Here's the secret all pro jewelry photographers know: lighting is 90% of the result.

You can use a $2000 DSLR or a $200 smartphone — if the lighting is wrong, your photos will be bad. Get the lighting right, and even a phone produces studio-quality results.

So we're going to spend almost zero money on gear and 100% of our effort on getting the light right.

Your $50 Beginner Kit

Let's build this from scratch. Here's every item you need:

Already in Your House ($0)

ItemPurpose
Your smartphoneThe camera (iPhone 12+ or any 2021+ Android)
A bright windowYour main light source
A white bedsheet or shower curtainDiffuser (softens harsh light)
A stack of booksTripod substitute
Tissue paper or white printer paperMini diffuser for tiny details
Microfiber clothFor cleaning jewelry (critical!)

Under $50 (One-Time Purchase)

ItemWhere to BuyCost
White foam board (20×30 in)Dollar Tree, Amazon$1–$5
White poster board or seamless paperWalmart, Michaels$3–$10
Phone tripod (optional but nice)Amazon$10–$20
Jewelry ring stand (optional)Amazon, Etsy$5–$15

Grand total: $0–$45

Setting Up Your Station (15 Minutes)

Let's put it all together. We'll build two setups — one for flat lays (white background product shots) and one for elevated shots (rings, stands).

Setup 1: White Background Product Shot

Best for: necklaces, bracelets, earrings — anything that lays flat.

Step 1: Find your window (north-facing = ideal, no direct sun)
Step 2: Tape your white poster board to the wall vertically
Step 3: Curve the bottom of the poster board outward to create a seamless "infinity" surface (no corner line!)
Step 4: Prop your foam board on the side OPPOSITE the window — this is your reflector
Step 5: Drape your white bedsheet over the window if the light is too bright
Step 6: Put your jewelry on the curved white surface
Step 7: Prop your phone on books, level with the jewelry

That's it. You now have a $0 studio.

Setup 2: Elevated Ring Shot

Best for: rings, pendants — anything that needs to show depth.

Step 1: Same window and reflector setup as above
Step 2: Place a small jewelry stand (or DIY eraser stand) on the white surface
Step 3: Position the ring on the stand at a 30–45° angle
Step 4: Put a tiny piece of tissue paper between the window and the ring's stone area (softens glare)
Step 5: Get your phone within 6–12 inches of the ring
Step 6: Tap the ring on screen, hold to lock focus/exposure

The 3 Core Lighting Principles

Master these, and 80% of your photos will look professional:

1. Soft Light = Good Light

Hard light (direct sun, bare lightbulbs) creates:

  • Sharp, ugly shadows
  • Bright hotspots on metal
  • Washed-out stone colors

Soft light (windows, diffusers) creates:

  • Gentle, gradual shadows
  • Even metal tones
  • Natural stone sparkle

Test: Hold your hand up to the light. If your shadow has sharp edges → hard light (bad). If your shadow is fuzzy and soft → soft light (good).

2. The Reflector Is Your Secret Weapon

Without a reflector, your jewelry has a bright side (toward the window) and a dark side (away from it). The dark side loses all detail.

The reflector (foam board) bounces window light back onto the dark side, filling in shadows. This is the single biggest improvement you can make to your photos.

Pro tip: The closer the reflector to the jewelry, the softer the fill light. Experiment with distance.

3. Shoot Parallel, Not At An Angle

Hold your phone so the lens is parallel to the front face of your jewelry. If you shoot from above at an angle, the jewelry looks distorted — rings become ovals, necklaces look stretched.

Phone Camera Settings to Change

Before you start shooting, open your phone camera and change these:

iPhone

  • [Settings → Camera] → Preserve Settings → Turn on AE/AF Lock
  • Turn off Live Photos (creates blurry frames)
  • Use Portrait mode only for model wearing shots (not product shots)

Android (varies by brand)

  • Set resolution to highest (4K if available)
  • Turn on gridlines (Rule of thirds composition)
  • Disable beauty/smoothing filters (they blur jewelry details)

For Both: Lock Focus & Exposure

  1. Point camera at your jewelry
  2. Tap and hold on the jewelry for 2 seconds
  3. You'll see "AE/AF Lock" appear
  4. Now you can move the camera slightly without it refocusing

This prevents your phone from hunting for focus mid-shot.

Your First Shoot: 10 Minute Practice

Grab one piece of jewelry and shoot these 5 photos:

#ShotWhat to Do
1White background flat layStraight-on, parallel to jewelry
2Close-up detailZoom in on stones or clasp
3Side profileShow thickness and depth
4Lifestyle propAdd one item (flower, box, silk)
5Back viewShow the underside

Review them. Compare each one. Notice the difference when the reflector is there vs. not there. Notice how the stone sparkles differently at different angles.

Troubleshooting Common Problems

ProblemFix
Background is gray, not whiteMove jewelry closer to window, push exposure up +10–15
Metal has ugly yellow/orange tintYou're using warm indoor light. Switch to window light.
Stone looks dark and lifelessAdd the tissue paper diffuser near the stone, or use a small flashlight to add a sparkle accent
Photos are blurryUse a tripod/stack of books. Or set phone timer to 3 seconds (eliminates hand shake)
Fingerprints visibleWipe jewelry with microfiber cloth. Seriously. Every time.
Ring looks flat, not 3DUse a ring stand to tilt it. Shoot at 45°, not straight down.

When to Upgrade (If Ever)

Your $50 setup will get you 90% of the way there. Upgrade only if:

UpgradeWhen You Need ItCost
Better tripodWhen your hand keeps shaking$15–$30
Light tent kitWhen you want consistent results in any weather$30–$60
Real camera + macro lensWhen you're doing 50+ products/month$500–$2000
AI photographyWhen you want 6 photos from 1 shot$9.90–$50/mo

For most small jewelry brands, a phone + window + foam board is all you'll ever need.

But Wait — There's an Even Faster Way

If setting up a studio still feels like too much work, tools like Jewelora skip the entire setup. Upload one photo of your jewelry, and it generates 6–8 studio-quality images — white background, model wearing, macro detail, lifestyle — in seconds.

Same result. Zero setup. Zero editing.
